March 2009
Two of our volunteers have told us that they will soon be moving on from the positions they have filled. Both Tom Vonderahe and Tiffany Everett have served CAM well, and their contributions will be missed.
Tiffany has been Calendar Editor for the Mencinnatian, and you see her output in each issue (as well as on the website). We'll miss our monthly reminders from our "calendar girl," but we wish Tiffany well as she moves to the Washington, DC area, where her fiancé lives. Yes, I said "fiancé"; congratulations go to both Tiffany and Chris. Thank you, Tiffany!
Tom Vonderahe has been our Scholarship Chair since the mid-1990s. Our program has flourished under his leadership - we have gotten high quality entries, leading to more than our fair share of regional and national awards. Tom has very much earned his retirement, and his shoes will be hard to fill. Thank you, Tom!
If you're interested in contributing to CAM, please let me or another Excomm member know. We have regular turnover in many of our positions, and we are always looking for quality people who will do good work for the group.
You’ll notice a couple of "double" events on the calendar again this month; I'm told last month's Excomm and Soup Night worked well. Let me make special note of the new member reception Stephanie Link is hosting at her Hyde Park home before Games Night on March 21. This is a chance for new members, newly active members, new-to-Cincinnati members, and active-after-a-long-time members to get together in a smaller group that won't be as overwhelming as the big crowd that (we hope) will arrive for Games Night. And, yes, we do hope for a good turnout of all our members that evening - old, new, regulars, once-in-a-blue-mooners, and even non-games players who just want to come "hang out" and chat.
What follows is largely an update of what I wrote in my March column last year. It's a reminder/plea to renew your membership. To those of you whose membership doesn't expire this year, or who have already renewed - thank you! - and you’ll find the rest of this column of little interest.
At this time of year, it may seem that I obsess on reminding members to renew. Well, this is my column for the March issue of the Mencinnatian, and the membership year expires at the end of March - so this is your last warning to renew on time.
If you're not sure if you need to renew, check the mailing label on the back of this Mencinnatian. (Electronic subscribers should call or email me if you want to know your expiration date.) The line above your name has three numbers - your membership number, your expiration year, and our local group identifier (03-452); if you see "2008," you hadn't renewed as of the end of January, and, unless you've renewed since the labels were printed, you need to renew.
How to renew? You can mail a check to the national office (the address is right above the mailing label); write your membership number on the check, or cut out and enclose the mailing label. Or you can renew online, with your membership number (from the mailing label), a credit card, and your membership login password. If you have questions, or want help, or want a new renewal packet, you can call the National Office at 800-66-Mensa (800-666-3672), and choose menu options 3, 2, & 2 to talk to the membership service department.
You can renew for 1 year, 3 years, or 5 years, or buy a life membership. In January, 49 CAM members renewed for 1 year, 3 for 3 years, 2 for 5 years, and 1 bought a life membership, leaving 183 members left to renew. It costs $59 to renew for one year, with discounts available for multi-year memberships; life memberships have actuarially determined amounts based on your age at the time they're bought.
