Scholarship Program News

The Mensa Education and Research Foundation (MERF) sponsors an annual Scholarship contest. The scholarship is based strictly on an essay written by the applicant and is open to High School Seniors anticipating college as well as college students. Further information about the program can be found on the American Mensa MERF website, for both the national and international scholarships.

The 2010 Scholarship Contest began on September 15, 2009 and all essays must be submitted by January 15, 2010. Please click here for an application. Instructions, and rules, may be found on the application.

2009 Scholarship Winners

1ST PLACE, $1,500
Susan Sprigg brings to her pursuit of a master’s degree in nursing a variety of health care related experiences. She was a licensed midwife in Seattle, Washington (not recognized in Ohio). She has worked in a women’s health clinic and at a clinic at the Seattle Children’s Hospital, among many experiences. Family brought her back to the University of Cincinnati where she is pursuing her nursing degree, intent upon being a provider of quality health care for those in need in the future.

2nd PLACE, $1,000
When Andrew Kennedy won our first place prize in CAM’s Scholarship Contest two years ago he was a senior at St Xavier High on his way to Purdue to study teaching Spanish and English as a Second Language. Times change, and he has become involved with the Gifted Education Research Institute at Purdue, and has served as a counselor in a residential summer program for 8 weeks of education for students well beyond the academic level of their peers. Through participation in this and other programs he hopes to help students to reach their full academic potential.

3rd PLACE, $500
A Senior at Sycamore High School, Brad Tenenholtz is on his way to Indiana University, Bloomington, to pursue a degree in business. His experience in Sycamore’s music programs including Pep Band and Concert Band have given him experience in teamwork, which he plans to use pursuing his intended degree.

DIANE MOSSIP REGIONAL AWARD, $300
Elizabeth Hall wants to be an astrophysist. Her motivation is a clear night’s sky. She has been in a Gifted and Talented student’s program, was the only girl in the Lego Robotics program in middle school, and the only girl and leader in the FIRST Robotics team at Highlands High School. She will be attending Northern Kentucky University, studying Physics.


2008 Scholarship Winners

1st Place, $1,500.00
Interning at the Cincinnati Enquirer is preparing Rebecca Cochran of Lebanon, Ohio for a career in journalism.  Accepted to Ohio University's Scripps College of Communication in Athens, Ohio, she plans a broad program of studies in this growing field.

2nd Place, $1,000.00
Abigail Wells wants to be a nurse.  A junior course in child development awakened a passion for children and their development.  She has been accepted into the Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) pre-nursing program, and this Aurora, Indiana student plans to work as a youth camp counselor (or you might find her at the Kroger photo lab).

In addition to the scholarship from Cincinnati Area Mensa, Ms. Well is the recipient of a $300.00 Diana Mossip Memorial Scholarship from the Mensa Education and Research Foundation.

3rd Place, $500.00
James Redden of Green Township hopes to further social justice through his studies in chemical engineering at the University of Notre Dame.  He is active in community services and has directed his education toward helping others.
